Self Assessment
Sometimes tests should be administered daily or weekly, and either the patient lives too far away, or the clinic is too busy to permit this. Often, if research demonstrates reliability, the test can be packaged into an app and sent home with the patient. This is perhaps more evident in the case of tests involving the primary senses – eyesight, hearing, speech – or psychological tests, but with ingenuity more challenging tests can be packaged up. We developed for the University of Montreal hospital Centre (CHUM) an app that uses the accelerometers and gyroscopes in your mobile device to assess tremor in patients with neurological symptoms. The patient is first assessed at the hospital, but can then be sent home with an app that repeats the tests a few times a day for several days. The data is encrypted for security and sent wirelessly to the hospital servers where results are assessed automatically. Within minutes the resulting report is securely emailed to the patient and / or her doctors. Look for MyTremor app on Google Play Store – an iOS version is also available, but not from the public App Store.
